Giants defense changed: Rouse to replace C.C. Brown in Sunday game

After beleaguered veteran safety C.C. Brown was beaten twice on deep passes for touchdowns, the New York Giants Coach Tom Coughlin decided to try someone else and the team made decision Friday that Aaron Rouse will be inserted into the starting lineup at safety while the team is playing against the San Diego Chargers this Sunday.

Brown missed a defensive audible in last Sunday’s 40-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, causing Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson to be able to score on a 54-yard pass play late in the first half. That mistake caused Coughlin’s decision to change the safety pared with Michael Johnson.

“We have three guys, they all play a lot,” Coughlin said. “The third safety played 26 snaps the other day. So we are just going to try to maneuver around a little bit and defend the deep ball better, that’s all.”

Rouse was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the third round in 2007. Starting 11 of the 27 games in Packers jersey, Rouse made a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown in 2008 against Peyton Manning, making a record of the longest interception return in Lambeau Field history. He was waived by the Packers in September and awarded to the Giants, who lost Kenny Phillips to a season-ending knee injury.
