Lions QB Stafford may sit out next two games with shoulder injury

With the team being beaten by the Cincinnati Bengals 23-13 Sunday night, the Detroit Lions rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford seemed too pessimistic about the team’s future to play more games. With four games left for the season, he said he wants to sit out one or two games to take after his shoulder injury.

The top pick in the draft originally hurt the shoulder during a win over the Cleveland Browns on Nov. 22 and is still feeling pains caused by the injury. What’s more, he aggravated the non-throwing shoulder in the final minutes during Sunday’s game against the Bengals after Dhani Jones, a linebacker in Bengals jersey, drove him onto the shoulder.

Stafford immediately left the game and sat on bench for the rest of the game. With a plan to have some medical tests after returning to Detroit, Stafford also said he would consider resting the shoulder for a while and may not play until it can work in 100 percent.

The Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford missed a second straight practice Thursday, but he was still unsure whether the kneecap has been dislocated and if he would be able to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

During a terse interview session that lasted about 20 seconds, Coach Jim Schwartz refused to tell the update on the rookie quarterback’s knee. By so far what has been known is that Stafford was listed as one of the Lions’ players who did not practice Thursday because of a knee injury and tests showed that no surgery was necessary since there was no structural damage.

Daunte Culpepper may be the starting quarterback if Stafford was unable to play Sunday game. But he was not telling what would happen, too, seeming not interested in discussing anything about the injury and playing status for Sunday.

The Detroit Lions Coach Jim Schwartz said Monday that Matthew Stafford was possible to be healthy enough to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers. At the moment, the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft is day to day and more information would be available on Wednesday.

Stafford’s right knee was twisted on a sack in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss against the Chicago Bears and he immediately grabbed behind it and screamed in pain on the ground. Daunte Culpepper replaced him and would take over the starting job at home against the defending champion Steelers if Stafford is still unable to play by then.

But coach Schwartz insisted that wouldn’t necessarily rule Stafford out even if he could not practice after Tuesday’s off day. He declined to say if Stafford’s kneecap is dislocated., sticking by one of his policies, limiting information he shares about injuries.
