Peyton Manning is still on top of MVP ranking

With the top three choices of MVP still being quarterbacks, the ranking begins to change after the New Orleans Saints had their first loss of the season and the Minnesota Vikings had their third. Brett Favre fell out of the top three and Philip Rivers surpassed him to be the third, while the No.1 and the No.2 are still Peyton Manning from the Indianapolis Colts and Drew Brees from the Saints but the spots have been switched.

There are still two games to be played, but it has seemed unlikely for the top two players to switch spots on the Meter. Manning may only play another half game or so since the Colts have home-field advantage in the AFC secured, and Saints head coach Sean Payton’s original plan not to play his starters until the final game went to death as the team did not manage to remain unbeaten. As it is unlikely that Manning would give really putrid performance during the final plays, it is also unlikely Brees would return to the first spot.

Titans running back Chris Johnson ranks behind Favre to be the No.5 choice for MVP, and he was followed by two players in Packers jerseys: quarterback Aaron Rodgers and cornerback Charles Woodson. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis and Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew are the last three at the top ten spots.

Brees VS Manning, who is most valuable

The three top players in the top three spots on the Meter this week is still the same three players in the spots last week. Without counting Brett Favre out, now the discussion is mostly about Drew Brees and Peyton Manning: who deserves the top spot more?

Some argue that Brees benefits from having a more experienced and better group of receivers than Manning, and because the Colts are still undefeated in spite of these factors, Manning is the more valuable player to his team. Hence, Manning should be on top in what continues to look like a head-to-head battle.

But some consider that Brees is one of the main reasons the Saints’ rushing attack is so successful. The quarterback in No.9 Saints jersey just could throw in any situation, which opens things up for Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell. New Orleans has 400 rushes this season, while Indy has 304, which is the fourth-fewest in the league. And the Saints would not have this kind of success if without Brees. Brees has thrown for more touchdowns, fewer interceptions, has a higher completion percentage and averages more yards per attempt than Manning — and he’s extremely valuable to the Saints. That is why Brees is still in the lead to become the MVP.
