After trading starting linebacker Will Witherspoon to the Philadelphia Eagles, the St. Louis Rams acquired an Eagles backup with no career receptions. That puts the heat on Donnie Avery, who bruised hip and skipped Wednesday practice.
The second-year wide receiver was restricted to off-field drills Wednesday. Two days earlier, an MRI exam that revealed a bruise instead of a stress fracture provided a measure of relief for a player who toughed out a solid rookie season with a similar injury. However, Avery is confident that he will be ready to play against the unbeaten 5-0 Indianapolis Colts this Sunday.
“It’s just a little hump in the road,” Avery said. “I’m going to get over it, get out there and make plays. The best receivers, you’re always going to have obstacles.”
The 0-6 Rams will play against the Colts with an inexperienced crew at wide receiver: last year’s fourth-round pick Keenan Burton (17 catches), Danny Amendola (nine catches, 24-yard kickoff return average) has been wearing Rams jersey just for a month after getting signed off the Eagles’ practice squad and Tim Carter (one catch) was re-signed last week after being among the final cuts before the season opener.

Rams cut ties to two top 2006 draft picks
The St. Louis Rams made a move on Tuesday for better team formation by releasing tight end Joe Klopfenstein and trading cornerback Tye Hill to the Atlanta Falcons for a draft pick. Both players were Rams’ top two picks from the 2006 draft.
Hill started 10 games as a rookie and had three interceptions and a fumble recovery but missed as many as 20 games during the past two seasons. Coach Steve Spagnuolo said that the trade was for the best interest of the team and he wished Hill all the best.
Klopfenstein did what he should do during the three seasons with the Rams, totaling 33 receptions for 386 yards and two touchdowns. Spagnuolo did not give a specific reason for releasing the tight end. Whatever, it must be for the team’s “best interest”, too.
